Why and how the Province of Potenza is participating
The PROVINCE OF POTENZA “Role model for inclusive Resilience and Territorial Safety” at the 3WCDRR in Sendai
The Privince of Potenza “Role model for inclusive Resilience and Territorial Safety” will represent the Italian Local Authorities during the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction which will be held in Sendai, Japan on March 14th-18th, 2015.
The Summit, to be attended by thousands of participants including national and regional authorities’ representatives, academics, representatives of civil society and of the private sector, aims to strengthen the resilience to natural disasters in the countries and communities.
On this issue, the Province of Potenza with its network of 100 Municipalities and communities has been recognized by the United Nations as a World Role Model for Inclusive Resilience and Territorial Safety, as part of the International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), ranking among the 15 municipalities that have distinguished themselves in the world on these issues.
The Province of Potenza has thus drawn on his long experience in the field of territorial safety (territory hit several times by earthquakes and affected by hydrogeological risk) to bring together all its 100 municipalities - unique example in the world - and the Major Groups (young , elderly, women, disabled, farmers, immigrants and social volunteering) to converge on the theme of "Resilience", adhering to the UN Campaign on Resilient Cities after having approved a strategic document, the Provincial Structural Master Plan, which brings together information with respect to the reduction of risks from disasters, the contrast to climate change and the sustainable development of its territory. The construction of the network of municipalities and communities marked the start of a process of broad inclusion in public decision-making on governance and land use issues, which will involve progressively "the private" in the improvement of the territory and the reduction of risks, as the public bodies can no longer support, by themselves, these actions, according to the new role of the Provinces provided by recent national institutional reforms.
